Review Wednesday - Social Location Marketing

Date:                     7/15/11
Title:                     Social Location Marketing: Outshining Your Competitors on Foursquare, Gowalla, Yelp & Other Location Sharing Sites
Author:                  Simon Salt
ISBN 10:                 0-7897-4721-9
ISBN 13:                 978-0-7897-4721-1
Pages:                            231
Publisher:              Que
Cover:                             Paperback
Reviewer:              Yolanda M. Johnson-Bryant– Literary Wonders!
Rating:                  4 Stars

Social Location Marketing by Simon Salt is an excellent book for those who still understand the purpose of social location sites. Many worry about privacy and geo-tagging capabilities, but in Social Location Marketing, readers, especially business owners, will have a better understanding of how social media location sites can help in their business.

This title shows marketers that there are other sites besides Foursquare and Facebook place, such as Gowalla, Yelp, SCVNGR, MyTown, Whrrl, Brightkite and Loopt. The book shows users how to set up account with a few of the major players and gives description of each resource.

What’s more important about this book is its use of case studies and examples of how location marketing can mean more customers and money for businesses.

As if this book couldn’t be any more valuable, buyers of this book also receive a free 45-day online edition of the book. I highly recommend this book to businesses that use and count on social media to bring in new business.

Review Wednesday - The Volunteers' Guide to Fundraising

Publisher:              Nolo
Cover:                   Paperback
Reviewer:              Yolanda M. Johnson-Bryant – Literary Wonders!
Rating:                  4 Stars

I always find Nolo books very valuable and The Volunteers’ Guide to Fundraising is no different. The book is packed with very useful tips on what types of companies and organization can participate in fundraising activities as well as what the groups can and cannot do from a legal standpoint.
A fundraising committee can run background checks on its volunteers and this guide shows you just how to do that as well as creating a budget.
This title has a wide array of money raising suggestion such as festivals, dinners, contests, sporting events and auctions.
As with many Nolo guides, there is an attached CD-ROM. It is complete with information on how to apply for grants and a wide array of forms.
I recommend this to any group, but especially non-profits, schools, daycares and small businesses. In addition, readers can reference the book online at Nolo.com.

Review Wednesday - Money Can't Buy Love by Connie Briscoe

Date:                     7/10/11
Title:                     Money Can’t Buy Love
Author:                  Connie Briscoe
ISBN 10:                 0446534846
ISBN 13:                 978-0446534840
Pages:                   289
Publisher:              Gran Central Publishing
Cover:                  Hardcover
Reviewer:             Yolanda M. Johnson-Bryant– Literary Wonders!
Rating:                  3.5 Stars

Money Can’t Buy Love by bestselling author Connie Briscoe is the story of Lenora Stone. Lenora is drowning in debt and desperately trying to hang on to her boyfriend of three years—who really shows no interest in her. Even though he has cheated on her before, she can’t seem to put a finger on why he appears to be so distant.
In addition to money and relationship problems, Lenora, a photographer, despises her evil boss. For entertainment purposes, Lenora humors herself and purchases a lottery ticket. She was sure she wouldn’t win, until she does.
Lenora’s life begins to change. The funny thing about it is, with her newfound fortune, the people in Lenora’s life begin to change, including her attention-lacking boyfriend. Things begin to spiral out of hand and she soon finds out that Money Can’t Buy Love.
I’ve enjoyed many of Ms. Briscoe’s novels; however, this one did not move me as much as past novels by this author have. If it weren’t for the “lottery” factor, I’d have to say this novel read more like a YA novel.
Fortunately, Connie Briscoe has written other great stories and I look forward to reading her next novel.

About the Author

Connie Briscoe has been a full-time published author for more than 17 years. Her work has hit the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Washington Post, Boston Globe, Boston Herald, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists.

About the Book

At age thirty-eight, instead of socializing with Baltimore’s A-list, Lenora Stone photographs them for Baltimore Scene, a glossy magazine filled with beautiful people who, unlike Lenora, never have to worry about car trouble and overdue bills. Lately even things with her boyfriend Gerald haven’t been right. They’ve been together for three years but he can’t seem to ask the one question she’s been waiting to hear.
